Join us on Sunday, August 27, for an Urban Lettering Walk of the Haight-Ashbury with Paul Shaw!
Urban lettering walks are day tours dedicated to seeking out beautiful, odd and intriguing examples of lettering in the streetscapes of a single city. The tours embrace a wide range of lettering in terms of style, technique and materials: inscriptions carved or cast in stone, painted “ghost” signs on brick walls, decaying neon signs, graffiti and more. Our guide will be designer and design historian Paul Shaw. Since 1980 Shaw has taught calligraphy, lettering, typography, book design, the history of graphic design, and the history of typography at a variety of New York-area universities, design schools, and at California Rare Book School. He is the author of Helvetica and the New York City Subway System and his work has won awards from the Type Directors Club, AIGA, New York Art Directors Club, Print and Letter Arts Review.
Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes and meet us at Duboce & Noe Muni stop (across the tracks from the playground) at 10 am on Sunday, August 27, 2023. We'll stroll and admire lettering for about two hours with lunch to follow.
WHEN: Saturday, August 27, 2023, 10 am.
